Hey, this is Schaler with the report for Monday morning
This morning's dawn patrol: Lightly textured, peaky lines on tap this morning. Things are a little sluggish as we approach high tide, so look for a little improvement when the tide drops back out.

day 76: oceanside to pacific beach

>> Tuesday, January 5, 2010

we have decided the three places that we are considering for relocation are: wilmington north carolina, charleston south carolina and san diego.  with that being said we are focusing a bit more time and energy in seeing san diego thoroughly.

we tried to camp in northern san diego at san elijo state beach, but the reservation process and rules for the state beaches are jacked up.  we were not able to find reasonable accommodations so we back to a place we have previously visited in pacific beach called campland on the bay.

i got in two good sessions at tourmaline surf beach before the pacific went flat.

day 74: morro bay to oceanside

our plan is to see as much of california as humanly possible.  in order to do that we are making stops in places we missed on the way up.  northern san diego county is now on our radar and we camped for a couple days in oceanside.

oceanside is a chilled out surf town with a fun beach area.  i got a couple good sessions in at the beach break, waist to chest and long california lines.

while in eceanside we had a great dinner.  teriyaki chicken boston lettuce wraps with sprouts and cuccumbers.

surfing cayucos

>> Friday, January 1, 2010

morro rock right outside my front door was indeed breaking while we stayed here, but the break was disorganized and closey-outy.

just down highway 1 a couple miles was cayucos and i got a good session in at the pier.  the locals were nice, i slid right into the lineup at the peak and scored some long lines.  it was fairly clean and throwing chest high bombs.

thank you hedwig for the cayucos recommendation!

day 68: fairfield to san francisco

>> Tuesday, December 29, 2009

we spent a wonderful 11 days with weston exploring; santa cruz, the redwood forest, napa valley and sonoma county.  we ended the trip at wes's home in fairfield where we had christmas.  we made a traditional christmas eve meal of roasted chicken and stuffing, garlic mashed potatoes and green bean casserole.  Christmas day we saw the movie avatar in imax 3d and had mexican food.  Although we were not with our immediate family... our time spent with an old friend over christmas was awe inspiring.

day 68 we packed up bento box and headed for san francisco.   we got about 40 miles when we recognized we had a another shredded trailer tire, we were about at the middle of the bay bridge no less.  sunday after christmas downtown san fran with a bum tire on the camper is no place to be.  after making many calls to tire stores, rv repair places and finally hotels.  we decided to find a cheap hotel and hunker down until there were businesses open to repair our problem.

we had to order some new tires which took 24 hours so we went out and explored the city in the mean time.

cable car with an Alcatraz back.  this scene made me sing the rice-a-roni song for hours.

our hotel was on lombard and a couple of blocks away was this street, "the curviest street in the world."

per tim's suggestion we enjoyed the famous irish coffee from buena vista.

cashmere enjoyed every bit of crissy field, the park at the base of the golden gate.

the waves at the golden gate were huge and cold.  these dudes have cojones grande!

the sunset made the golden gate sparkle like a new penny.

surfing santa cruz

>> Saturday, December 19, 2009

i have said it before about other california breaks, but i have to say it again.  surfing in santa cruz is like disneyland.  i checked pleasure point and steamer lane and steamer looked to good not to paddling out.  nw ground swell just throwing head high peelers off the cliffs.  i have a good session, could have been better.  a lot of people in the water and the kelp is everywhere and overwhelming.  i think for today's session i am going to switch out the big single fin for a snubbed 3 fin set.  maybe i can get over on the kelp better.

planning my steamer lane attack

there are a lot of rippers here

surfing san onofre/trestles/huntington beach

>> Wednesday, December 16, 2009

we decided to have an extended stay in newport beach, centrally located in orange county to all the world class surf breaks.

sunday i peeped the newport beach and balboa piers and the monster they call the wedge.  too bad it was blown out.

monday kristen and i drove down to san onofre state beach and hiked up to trestles.  i surfed san onofre, church and lower trestles.  church and lowers were the stand out sessions... i was blessed to surf some of the longest cleanest chest high waves.  no exaggeration, i linked a couple sections that may have been a 1/2 mile long.

tuesday kristen and i drove up to huntington beach pier.  huntington is like disneyland for surfers.  we happened to huntington with good timing... every tuesday on the blocks by the pier they host a street fair.  kristen scored a sweet 1/2 price burton parka.  i had a good surf session, got i bit chopped and the current over the pier a bit to strong towards the end.

surfing san diego

>> Saturday, December 12, 2009

i have to admit, pulling into san diego i was a bit nervous thinking about the idea of surfing the forecasted "overhead to double overhead."  but being dry for a couple weeks... i got over the nerves quickly, picked a mellow beach break and paddled out.  it turns out i am enough of a surfer to mack on the head high pacific ground swell.  i had a couple really good sessions at pacific beach, some of the best surfing i have ever experienced.

day 42-47 texas at large

>> Sunday, December 6, 2009

day 42: new orleans to galveston, texas.  i-10 through baton rouge was hell, it took a hour to travel 3 miles.  then finally once in galveston the rain came.  i lived close to galveston when i was young and getting into town brought back a flood of memories.  galveston looked a bit worse for wear after being devastated with storms last year.  ironically we really did not get to explore much since it rained for 48 hours straight.

galveston island state park campground under water.

stopped through the old familiar home town of my family.

day 44:  galveston to port aransas.  getting tired of the being wet, we pushed on to port aransas down the coast from galveston.  in port aransas the rain stopped, but then it got cold the temperature dropped 15 degrees.  port-a is a cool town... the beach is hard packed and the municipality considers the beach a roadway and also you can have a campfire anywhere and camp on the beach for free.  we drove 20 miles of the beach down to padre island.

the surf was flat and the "men in grey suits" were gigantic.

day 46:  port aransas to austin.  this is the unfortunate day that we have left the coastline to cross the country.  we arrived late to austin, got a cheap hotel room and headed out on the town.  we got some good food and some hot music at lambert's, an unscale bbq joint in downtown austin.  in the morning i ended up in bad shape, either some food poisoning or i was dosed by someone at the bar.... i spend the next 10 hours with my head in the toilet.  we had to stay an extra night just so i could recover properly.

checked out a set by "brownout!" a blazin' hot latin funk band... they dudes kicked ass.  they serve as the back up band for prince.

day 23/24: st. augustine to sebastian inlet to palm beach

>> Saturday, November 14, 2009

days 23/24 were full of travel and i learned a valuable lesson.  simple put.... surf when there are waves.  we traveled from st. augustine to sebastian inlet on day 23.  during our trip down scenic a1a we stopped in daytona/ponce inlet for lunch.  while eating my subway $5 foot long, the waves were waist to chest and mackin'.  instead of sneaking out for little session i decided to keep driving, since sebastian inlet is famous for surfing and the forecast for the next 3 days was good.  we arrived to sebastian inlet did out thing, i awoke to next morning to a cold blown out surf!  in addition our camper has snapped a lift cable so only 3 of the posts will support the roof now.  we decided to move on to palm beach in search of sun and better waves, and yes we have found it.

blogger back story

my wife and i have had a fairly mundane life so far. we live in northern delaware where we met, fell in love, bought a house and got married. we enjoy traveling, camping, surfing and eating well and we do not have any children. we are in our mid-thirties and have average careers, not glamorous or high paying, but consistent none the less. as time passes day to day in our mundane life there has been something growing stronger inside of us for years. that something is the need to break out of our slumber and live life to the fullest. we want to see the world and find a place by the edge of the sea to call home and open our own business. we keep revisiting this idea, reinventing the plan, but never following through. last december we got serious... we wrote down goals, step by step, to move towards achieving our dreams. we created a budget and decided we could feasible travel in our pop-up camper for 3 months exploring the coast in search for the place we wanted to live. we saved money for traveling, we got our house appraised, we worked on curb appeal & we sold cumbersome unessential possessions. last big step was to sell our house and our target was September. we finally got our house on the market on friday, september 25. we had
several contingency plans for different times when it would sell. to our astonishment the house sold in 48 hours!

on surfing

in 2004 my parents took my entire family on a Hawaiian cruise. during this cruise i had a life altering experience... a surf lesson on the island of maui. being a water person already, i immediately i had a definitive connection with surfing. upon arrival back in delaware i went out and purchased my first surf board. i started surfing the local breaks occasionally. i got my closest friends into it and they too ended up buying boards. occasionally turned into frequently and then every day off of work. my first board turned into several and then into a quiver. surfing started as a hobby, a mere fascination and now is a lifestyle that provides me spiritual well being. the connection to a higher power is never more present than during a good dawn session. out in the line up the stressful hustle bustle of life melts away and i can get quiet with god and recharge my internal battery. i'm sure surfing means different things to different people, but for me it is about the soul. i feel i am a better person because what surfing does for me and i will pursue that feeling for the rest of my life.
